Star Spangled Banner

Here is the poem I entered into the July poetry contest.  The challenge was for a patriotic poem in any style. I have learned that this poem won second place.

Star Spangled Banner

The little fellow waves
as the flag passes by.
A soldier tall and brave
brings a tear to his eye.

As years go on the boy
becomes an army man.
Daddy’s pride and joy,
now wearing cammo tan.

The banner proudly waves
against the hard blue sky,
the free men and the brave
gone overseas to die.

His weeping Mom holds it,
grim souvenir of war,
clean and neatly folded.
Not waving any more.

His Daddy hides his tears
while grieving for the son
cut down in tender years;
his boy, his only one.

The bloody banner waves
over seas and desert sand,
and over young men’s graves.
Oh God! Come heal our land!
